D'Angelo charged with DUI, drug possession

Grammy Award-winning R&B artist Michael Eugene Archer, better known as D'Angelo, was arrested early Sunday morning by Chesterfield County police after a traffic stop.


Archer, a Richmond native and a Midlothian resident, was pulled over at 4:10 a.m. in the 3100 block of Polo Parkway, where he was charged by county police with driving under the influence of alcohol. A subsequent search yielded "what we believe to be cocaine and marijuana," said Capt. Karl Leonard of the Chesterfield police.

The substances will be sent to state laboratories for analysis, Leonard said.

Along with the drunken-driving charge, the artist was charged with possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, and possession of a controlled substance, a felony. The drunken-driving charge, the singer's first, is a misdemeanor.

Archer, 30, posted bail and is due in Chesterfield General District Court on Tuesday.

Sunday's incident was not the first run-in with the law in Chesterfield for Archer, a graduate of Huguenot High School.

In November 2002, he was arrested at his home on misdemeanor charges of aggressive driving, assault, curse and abuse, and disorderly conduct.

The charges stemmed from an alleged confrontation on Nov. 17, 2002, with a woman at the Bellegrade Texaco on Huguenot Road in which she said the artist cursed at and spit on her.

When police came to his home to take Archer into custody the next day, he allegedly resisted and an officer subdued him with pepper spray. Police handed him an additional charge of resisting arrest.

In March 2003, Archer reached a civil settlement with the woman and was fined $500 after pleading no contest to obstruction of justice.

In 2000, Archer received the Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for "Untitled [How Does it Feel]" from the album "Voodoo." That compilation also won a Grammy for Best R&B Album.

One critic referred to D'Angelo, who has not released an album since "Voodoo," as the second coming of legendary singer Marvin Gaye.
